THE STRAND ARCADE - SYDNEY
When the Strand Arcade opened in 1891 it was the fifth and the last of the arcades built in Victorian Sydney. Today it is the only one remaining in its original form.
Sydney was a Victorian city in 1891. Grandeur and elegance was the style of the day as the city's architects created landmarks that echoed the familiar traditions of hometown London.
In the earlier period the Arcade was referred to as the City Arcade and sometimes known as Arcade Street. In 1981 finally named after the famous London Street that links the city of London and the city of Westminster. The Strand was London's smartest theatre, hotel and shopping street in the early 1900's.

There are so many interesting things in Sydney, from what I hear from friends who live there, and these images truly verify that. Great job!
ReplyDeleteThat arcade reminds me of an old arcade in Huntington WV. We used to go to our dentist there. There was a little coffee shop and a peanut shop not far. Your shots brought back memories and are very nice.
ReplyDeleteWonderful! I love the Victorian splendor of it, with all that red and gold. You're right - it's very reminiscent of London. Thanks for showing it off!
ReplyDeleteOoh...very victorian indeed! Nice shot.

Oh, I sorta flashed on the movie Carnival of Souls, a trippy horror classic. It had a seaside building that played a big part in the plot, and it looked very similar to this arcade. Neat place!
ReplyDeleteI visited the Strand Arcade once when I was in Sydney more than 10 years ago. Beautiful architecture!
ReplyDeleteWow, what a great looking place! Excellent photos! :)
